3Ds Max - How to create a Cup

Thursday, October 08, 2015 0 Comments A+ a-

Hello guys, welcome back to hong-artists.blogspot.com, and now we're going to talk about 3Ds Max!
This is probably my first tutorial ever, so if you guys have any comment, or tips, or maybe you have some guidance to make this blog and tutorials even better, you can comment down below. Thankyou. :)

So without any further talk, let's get started.

1. Change your model's scale
Okay, so first of all, in this tutorial, we're going to use a "centimeters" as our unit setup. To change the setting, go to Customize > Unit Setup > Metric > Centimeters.

2. Create the cup's body
Now we have the correct measurements, then let's make the cup's body. There's so many method to do that, but in this tutorial we'll use the line method. Select the line, left click to draw until you got something like the picture below. Right click to end it.

3. Dealing with the edges & vertices
When we start drawing the line, we noticed the edge's its kinda rough, and spikey. Of course, we don't want a spikey cup? So what should we do?
Okay, first thing we need to go to the right bar on the screen, press the "vertex". Notice our line will appear some dots, Then select the middle dots. Once you selected, right click on the viewport then click Bezier.
Now you can smooth the edges until somekind like the image below. goodluck! :)

After you get it, it's time to deal with the upper edges. This time we need to select both of the upper dots, still on the vertex categories, click on fillet button. Now you can drag your mouse down until you have a fine, nice, smooth edge.

4. Transform the cup's body from line into shape
Now we have a smooth edge, it's time to turn this line into a 3D shape. And how to do it? Now click on the "Line" button on the right bar. with the line selected, go to modifer list and apply Lathe modifier.
You may shock with the results, but don't worry, we'll fixed it later. :)

Now, with the lathe modifier selected, tick the "Wield Core" button, change the segment into 48 and press Min under the Align selection. There we have it.

5. Cup's hand
Now we have the cup made, but what's missing? The hand.
So in the front view camera, like the step 1, draw the line, transform and move the line until somekind like the image below. Red for smooth, and Blue for Bezier.

Once you have it, still on the vertex mode, go check the boxes for "Enable in Render" and "Enable in Viewport". Change the thickness as you desired, for me? I'll set it to 30cm. And don't forget to change the sides number to 12 or more for higher resolutions.

6. Grouping
Now you have a cup and its hand, it may looks stick to each other, but they aren't. So, what we need to do next, is to group them into one group. How to do it?
We go to Edit > Group > Group

7. Assign the materials
Now we have the cup, the last thing is to put the materials on it.
I'm not teaching this part, because every people's imagination is different, so I want you to find
your own materials depends on what you like, it could be glass, wood, and in case mine is a normal brown coloured glass made of ceramic.

That's all for today's tutorial, I hope it's really useful, and if you interested in further tutorial, don't forget to follow or suscribe to this blog for further informations.
Also, if you have any questions or request on what I should post next, comment below, cya! :)
